Children develop quickly in their early years; their experiences between birth to five years have a significant impact on their future life chances. Every child deserves the best possible start in life and the support that they need to enables them to fulfil their potential. At Witty Kiddies Preschool, we follow strictly the EYFS curriculum.


The Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) sets the standards that all early providers must meet to ensure that children learn and develop well, and are kept healthy and safe. It promotes teaching and learning to ensure children are ready for the “big school’ and gives them the broad range of knowledge and skills that provide the right foundation for good future progress through school and later life.



EYFS covers the development and welfare of children. It consists of 7 areas which are made up of 3 prime areas focusing on earlier development and 4 specific areas.



Personal, Social and Emotional Development

Children are taught to play co-operatively, take account to one’s ideas and they show sensitivity to others’ needs and feelings.

We help children to develop a positive sense of themselves and confidence in their own abilities; to form positive relationships and develop respect for others; to build social skills and manage their feeling; and to understand appropriate behaviour. We encourage this by providing group activities that involves turn taking, role play area that are resourced with familiar and unfamiliar materials to extend their learning.

Communication and Language

We encourage children to experience a rich language environment; to develop their confidence and skills in expressing themselves and to speak and listen in a range of situation. We encourage children to follow instructions involving several ideas or actions, also use past, present and future forms accurately when talking about events that have happened or are to happen in the future. We achieve this by providing different kind of books, pictures, and we use correct grammar when telling repetitive stories .

Physical Development

Children are encouraged to be active, interactive and develop their coordination, control and movement. We encourage them to understand the importance of physical activities and making food choices. We also encourage them to manage their own basic hygiene and personal needs including dressing and going to the toilet independently.



We provide children with opportunities to develop their skills in counting, understanding and using numbers, doing simple calculations and describing shapes and measures. We support children to use everyday language to talk about sizes, weight, time and money. They explore, recognise, create and describe patterns. We achieve this by providing a range of natural materials for children to arrange, compare and order.


Understanding the World

Children are guided to make sense of their physical world through opportunities to observe and explore places, people, technology and environment. They learn about similarities and differences in things. They talk about  the features of their own immediate environment and how environments might vary from one another.



We support children to link sounds and letters and to begin to read and write. They will have access to a wide range of reading materials- books, poems and other items to spark interest. We encourage children to use their phonic knowledge to write words in ways which match their spoken sounds.


Expressive Arts and Design

We enable children to explore a wide range of media and materials, and encourage them to share their thoughts, ideas and feelings through various activities in art, music, dance, role play, and design technology.


We use an online observation and development tracking systems which parents can access and make comments whenever they wish at the comfort of their home and this encourages parent partnerships. Children are observed by their key person daily in order to plan on how they can further extend and support each child. The key staff plan activities that reflect children’s individual developmental needs, recording both adult-led and child-initiated activities and ideas.

A record is maintained, showing the children abilities, progress, interests and areas needing further staff and parental support. We understand that children learn in different ways and pace and so we plan accordingly. Parents are encouraged to contribute to their child’s learning by sharing information about their child’s achievement at home.


Observations are taken through different ways that include photos, text, and video. All observations will be reviewed by the child’s key person who will then use the information to build on the child’s next step of learning goal.
